shark diving - seperating myth from reality

shark diving

At first scuba divers were paranoid about sharks... they were even seen as enemy #1 and their destruction was encouraged. Gradually, however, a growing admiration for these fearsome and chillingly beautiful creatures began to take root, and today the camera is increasingly taking the place of the speargun and other instruments of death.

The KwaZulu-Natal coast of South Africa has always been a popular destination for scuba diving enthusiasts from around the world with colourful sub-tropical coral reefs, shipwrecks, sharks and a stunning variety of sea life to be found. Added attractions are the pleasant all year round climate, the warm, clear water and excellent back up in terms of infrastructure and facilities.

Based in Park Rynie and launching from Rocky Bay, +-45km's South of Durban on the Natal South Coast, Offshore Africa offers all avid scuba divers and particularly those with a passion for diving with sharks, a Professional, safe and friendly dive charter service. Rocky Bay is regarded as one of the best kept scuba diving secrets of the (KZN) Natal coast. Much like Aliwal Shoal (which is still accessible from Rocky Bay) the reef systems off Rocky Bay are abundant in colourful soft coral and are fossilized sand dunes that have been worn away over the years, creating drop-offs, gullies, caves, overhangs and ledges.... teeming with sea life, and attracting big game fish and numerous predatory sharks.

With only a couple of Scuba Diving operators in this area , the reefs are untouched and an abundance of reef fish are likely to be seen as well as big game fish, Manta's and up to 17 different species of sharks such as Tiger Sharks, Zambezi Sharks, Blacktip Sharks, Dusky Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks, Ragged Tooth Sharks, Thresher and the occasional Great White Shark...to name a few. Over the years, a select number of Dive Operators have been interacting and studying these amazing animals in their natural environment along the KZN South Coast, between Umkomaas and Park Rynie on the East Coast of South Africa. Tiger Sharks are daily visitors during the summer months with anything between 1 and 8 Tiger Sharks making their appearance throughout any particular dive.

A healthy population of Blacktip Sharks abounds in the area and can be encountered in large numbers throughout the year. The commercial aspect of diving without a cage with these sharks has been on the go in this area for a number of years and has allowed thousands of avid scuba divers and underwater photographers to experience this unique encounter safely and in a non harmful manner to both scuba diver and shark. Bottlenose Dolphin, Whale Sharks and Humpback Whales are also common visitors to this stretch of coastline and are regularly encountered while travelling to and from dive sites.
